The rumors of the 2012 Toyota RAV4 EV being only available to fleet and car sharing programs have been dispelled, as Toyota USA recently announced the upcoming RAV4 EV will indeed be available for sale to the general public right here at Acton Toyota.
Specialty manufacturer of high-end electric sports cars, Tesla, inked a three-year deal with Toyota to supply $100 million in powertrain equipment to power the 2012 RAV4 EV. Equipment includes advanced lithium-ion battery technology and a powerful electric motor for class-leading acceleration and top speed. This agreement alone supports the notion that Toyota plans to mass-produce the RAV4 EV at least through 2014.
The vehicle is currently in demonstration and evaluation with 35 RAV4 EV’s scheduled to hit the road through the end of 2011. Electric range is projected to be 100 miles over a wide range of real-world conditions.
This is a huge step forward for not only the Toyota brand, but also for both loyal Toyota customers and those new to the brand who are seeking a fully-electric drivetrain in their next vehicle.
